Covid has seen learners and instructors badly affected. But lessons and tests have continued. So, to make good use of your time, here are some tips for preparing to take a driving test in winter.

Braking distance

You may have come across this in your theory test, but it’s well worth reminding yourself about braking distance, and how winter factors that can affect it.

The braking time is the time it takes you to think and react to the situation when you are driving, and the potential for icy or wet slippery roads should keep you extra alert.

The Highway Code notes that the stopping distance in adverse conditions should be at least twice the distance compared to a dry surface.

And in icy conditions, the Highway Code states braking distances can be ten times higher!

Use your study time at home wisely

With the lockdown keeping you inside, you can use this time to prepare even more for test day.

One thing you can do at home, is brush up your reflexes and reaction times. These skills can really help you when dealing with other vehicles on the road, and any other hazards.

It might sound a bit odd, but action-based video games are proven to increase reaction times! So if your parents are hassling you about spending too much time on them, you have a good excuse – until you pass your driving test …
